Sungnyemun Gate, holding history in the heart of the city

Sungnyemun Gate, holding history in the heart of the city

Walking through the heart of Seoul, seeing Sungnyemun Gate standing between tall buildings makes it stand out even more than you'd expect. Many international tourists know it as 'Namdaemun Gate' rather than 'Sungnyemun', and it's more interesting when you know it was the southern main gate of the Seoul Fortress during the Joseon Dynasty. It's great for seeing the details of the dancheong and the gate during the day, but the atmosphere changes completely once the sun sets and the lights turn on, making it a beautiful night view. Many travel reviews often mention that it's worth visiting again at night. Since Namdaemun Market is right next door, it's perfect to take a quick look at Sungnyemun and then head over to the market to enjoy food like kalguksu or braised cutlassfish.
